Troubleshooting
your appliances

Proper care and maintenance of your appliances are key to successful treatment. But we know issues come up, so it’s good to understand which ones are emergencies and which can wait for your next available appointment.

What are emergencies:

Injury to the mouth and jaws

In the case of accidents involving your teeth, please call us and your dentist immediately. Depending on severity, please call 911.

Dislodged cemented appliances

Please call our office or our emergency phone during off hours.

What are bumps in the road:

Loose buttons, brackets or bands

If any of the above happens, stop wearing your elastics. If a bracket or band is still attached to the wire, leave it in place. If uncomfortable, cover with orthodontic wax. If anything falls out, bring it with you to your next appointment. Please call our office before your appointment so that we can prepare ahead and minimize your wait.

Loose tie wire or elastic tie

Notify us at your next appointment.

Headgear or appliance does not fit

Notify the assistant at your next appointment.

Soreness from braces

Rinse your mouth with warm salt water. If necessary, take a pain reliever that you would use for a headache or similar discomfort.

Wire out of tube

Try to place wire back into tube with tweezers. Place wax if uncomfortable.

Poking wire tie

Bend wire tie back with a spoon or pencil eraser. If unsuccessful, cover with wax.

Poking arch wire

Cover with wax or wet cotton.

Rough aligner edge

If the edge of your plastic aligner is rough and is rubbing against your cheeks or lips, use an emery board to smooth it down

For any of the above, please call to notify our office so that we can answer your questions and address your needs. Prompt repairs will help ensure that treatment stays on schedule.
